One beloved custom that perfectly complements their cuisine is RAKI, the traditional drink of Crete. Typically served after meals, during gatherings in restaurants, or whenever people come together— to greet, celebrate, or simply share a moment. Its origins trace back to the ancient distillation of pomace the grape skins left over from the autumn wine harvest. Though known as tsipouro in other parts of Greece, in Crete, RAKI is a cultural staple found in every home. It’s a symbol of hospitality, friendship, and everyday connection. Whether offered to guests or enjoyed at festivals, raising a glass of raki— always with a cheerful “Yamas”—is about warmth and belonging.
